Abu Sila herb and fruit drying centre
Project 4
Description:
We have helped Mahmoud Mansur, a local entrepreneur, to establish a herb and fruit drying centre in Abu Sila, which is supplied by remote gardens where the local people grow herbs and fruit. The centre has been designed and is being managed by Mahmoud Mansur. It is linked to his central outlet in St Katherine's.
Purpose:
To provide an improved herb and fruit drying/packaging facility
To support a local entrepreneur
To encourage the Jebelia Bedouin to increase garden production
To encourage sustainable development centred around gardens
To provide employment
Beneficiaries:
30 Bedouin families and many garden owners.
Project Work:
The project has provided a new water storage tank, a new large strong polythene tunnel with racks for drying and a small stone building to be used for packaging work.
Partner:
Mahmoud Mansur.
Status:
The polythene tunnel is in operation; some work on the packaging building remains to be completed. The Makhad Trust support for this project, which contributes to the success of the garden restoration scheme, will continue.
