Nawamis community well, Nawamis, South Sinai
Project 6
Description:
The Nawamis community in the desert has no water supply close by; water has to be trucked in, at some cost. As a result the community cannot exist in Nawamis during the hot summer months.
Providing the well will enable the community to live all year round in their homes, and will mean that they have sufficient water for themselves, their animals, a new school and for the influx of people visiting the large Bedouin hospitality tent.
Income from the tent and a camel station will help the school to be self-supporting.
Purpose:
To assist the Bedouin community maintain a sustainable desert economy.
To provide a social structure which will become the heart of the community.
Beneficiaries:
The community of Nawamis and children from neighbouring villages.
Project Work:
The work will consist of:
deepening the existing hand-dug well, using a mechanical drill
providing a cover and flood barrier to prevent the well and the whole complex from flooding
installing a solar powered pump.
Partner:
The Nawamis community.
Status:
Work to construct the flood barrier is under way. Digging out the well to a greater depth will begin during 2009.
